When I was surfing the WordPress reader, I came across a post about “Happiness” which describes it as the state when people are satisfied with what they have. I agree with the point of view and would like to add my perspectives on it. In my view, happiness is an attitude and can be cultivated by any individual with an internal mindset. This post helps us understand about happy attitude and what it takes to develop such an attitude!
First, let us define the word “attitude”. As per wordnik.com, attitude is “a manner of thinking, feeling, or behaving that reflects a state of mind or disposition”. Suppose you have a happy attitude, your thinking, feeling, and behaving are inseparable from happiness. In other words, you will be happy every moment. This is the state of mind every person in the world would like to have all the time. Unfortunately, a few succeed in achieving it all the time. However, many people achieve happiness for short periods; we call it a cycle of “Ups and Downs” in life, where “Ups” refers to happy times.
In the last paragraph, we have seen about happy attitude. Now, let us look at different persons with a happy attitude. By studying them, let us define the traits of developing a happy attitude. Have you ever been to developing countries and had seen the lifestyle of the lower-middle-class people? These people are our first study type. Their earnings just look after their necessities; any savings will go to long-term commitments such as marriage, building a home, buying a car. When compared to an average citizen of a developed nation, they enjoy far fewer benefits in lifestyle and healthcare. Yet, they are happy; and, it is not due to ignorance. With social media and YouTube, they are aware of the outside world but somehow unaffected by it. Why is it so? Think about it for few minutes. Meanwhile, we will move to our second study type.
Many of us wondered about scientists for 2 reasons: for one, they are gifted with superior knowledge in a specific domain, and two, how do they find the motivation to spend so much time inside a laboratory for a long time? They are our second study case. Many reputed scientists choose to stay aloof, interact with a few people, and spend their time inside the laboratory. These people spend their life at work and become happy by doing their work. How is this possible when most of us are struggling to find happiness at work? Think about it. Let’s answer the question later.
Finally, we are about to see nomads. Nomads are people who backpack necessities and travel from place to place. Modern-day nomads travel in van, car, bike, boat, etc. The purpose of this nomadic life is to explore new stuff around the world. On one hand, we have poverty struck nomads who wander for food and water; they roam within a region or a country. On other hand, we have rich nomads who wander to meet new people; they travel around the world from one nation to other. These rich nomads have enough money back at home, and yet, they are happy only when they are roaming. Why would a wealthy person leave their home and survive a nomadic life with bare necessities? Think about it for few minutes.
It’s time to solve the puzzles from the above three paragraphs. In the first case, we saw a lower-middle-class happy family from a growing country. They are happy because they respect what they have in their hand. In the second case, we were baffled about scientists. They are happy because they have something to do with what they have. In the final case, we questioned the lifestyle of rich nomads. They are happy because they can always move around and find some person/place/thing to appreciate what they want to do.
In summary, develop a happy attitude with 3 steps:
- Be content with what you have in all situations.
- If you are expecting more, improve one thing at a time.
- Don’t stress yourself with expectations.
- Find something to do with what you have at hand.
- Don’t wait for things to fall in place.
- Don’t stress about something you don’t have at the moment.
- Be with people who appreciate what you do.
